Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads an exuberant performance of Beethoven’s fiery Fifth Symphony — from its iconic first four notes through its euphoric finale.
At Vienna’s Leopold Museum, surrounded by some of his favorite paintings and sculptures, Welser-Möst explores the brilliance of an entire symphony driven by a single motive, and discusses how such a familiar work can feel new again. Instead of dwelling on his formidable forebearers, he draws his inspiration from the joy of discovering new details each time he revisits a piece: “it’s not only that we as interpreters have to prove ourselves, a piece of art has to prove itself each new time.”
