BEETHOVEN ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฆ Overture No. 3
Suite (arr. Jilek)
Franz Welser-Mรถst leads a pair of works centered on freedom: Beethovenโs propulsive ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฆ Overture No. 3 and excerpts from Leoลก Janรกฤekโs intensely dramatic opera ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฎ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ.
Welser-Mรถst discusses freedom as a defining force in Beethovenโs music, describing ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฆ as philosophy made audible. In this overture, he hears a journey per aspera ad astra โ through difficulty, toward the stars โ much like the American Dream. Welser-Mรถst also reflects on Janรกฤekโs precise, unrelenting style and the way the Czech language colors his music โ declaring the Suiteโs ending โan enormous triumph of the human spirit.โ
