KRENEK Kleine Symphonie MAHLER Adagio from Symphony No. 10 The Cleveland Orchestra traverses the worlds of wit and longing in this evocative program, led by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. Ernst Krenek’s sly and restless Kleine Symphonie, a forgotten work born of the turbulent 1920s, is followed by an intimate meditation on Gustav Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10, the composer's final, unfinished utterance. In conversation, Welser-Möst muses on the disorienting days of hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic and its effects on artists and artistic life, and considers the work of Ernst Krenek — a curious, polyglot composer. The conductor also reflects on his relationship with the music of Gustav Mahler and the beauty and significance of presenting incomplete work, pregnant with what can no longer be said. The Cleveland Orchestra Franz Welser-Möst, conductor
